Spiegelworld →Sound has been the common thread throughout my career, but the work itself has expanded far beyond traditional sound design. Beginning in touring theatre and later moving through Broadway, international productions, immersive entertainment, and venue development, I have spent more than two decades exploring how technology, architecture, and performance intersect to shape audience experience.
My approach is rooted in autodidacticism — a process of continuous self-directed learning informed by real-world challenges rather than a single school of thought or design lineage. Working across diverse productions and environments has taught me that no two projects require the same solution. A Broadway musical, an international tour, a resident Las Vegas production, and a multi-use entertainment venue each demand a different balance of creativity, technology, and practicality.
Over time, my work evolved from mixing shows and implementing systems to designing the infrastructure that supports them. Today, I specialize in creating integrated environments where audio, show control, networking, and operational technologies function as a unified platform. Whether designing an intimate theatrical experience or a large-scale immersive venue, my focus remains the same: understanding the intent of the project and developing systems that support it.
The goal is never simply to make something louder, larger, or more complex. The goal is to create an experience that connects with an audience and remains memorable long after the performance is over.
Philosophy
My work is rooted in autodidacticism and the belief that meaningful design begins with understanding rather than answers. Throughout my career, I have found that the most important questions are rarely technical. They are questions about people: how they move through a space, how they interact with one another, what captures their attention, and ultimately how they experience an environment.
I view every project as a system of interconnected forces. Architecture influences behavior. Technology influences perception. Operational requirements shape creative possibilities. Audience expectations affect how experiences are received. Successful design comes from understanding these relationships and balancing them in a way that supports the intended outcome.
Technology plays an important role, but it is not the objective. New tools can create new possibilities, yet meaningful experiences are rarely the result of technology alone. The goal of design is not simply to control systems, but to influence experience. Every decision, whether architectural, operational, or technical, affects how people engage with a space. Good design begins by understanding those effects and using them intentionally.
The best solutions are not necessarily the newest, the most complicated, or the most expensive. They are the ones that align technology, environment, and human behavior in service of a clear purpose.
Approach
Every project begins by observing before designing.
Rather than starting with equipment, software, or a preferred technical solution, I begin by identifying the forces that shape a project. Audience behavior, architecture, operational requirements, creative goals, budgets, schedules, and technology all influence the final experience. Understanding how those forces interact is often more important than understanding the tools themselves.
My process is rooted in questioning assumptions and defining the problem before pursuing a solution. A theatre, restaurant, immersive venue, attraction, and touring production may all use similar technologies, yet they ask fundamentally different things of both their audiences and their operators. Successful systems respond to those differences rather than forcing a predetermined approach.
From there, I develop solutions that balance experience, functionality, and long-term sustainability. Whether designing a sound system, a network infrastructure, or a complete venue ecosystem, the objective remains the same: create environments that support the intended experience while remaining adaptable to future needs.
Technology is an important part of the process, but it enters the conversation only after the goals are understood. The solution should emerge from the problem, not the other way around.
History
My professional career began on the road, working my way through touring productions as an audio assistant, front-of-house engineer, and eventually Head Audio. Touring provided an education unlike any classroom, demanding both technical competence and practical problem-solving under constantly changing conditions. Productions such as Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, The King and I, 42nd Street, Chicago, and Reel to Real took me across North America, Asia, and Europe, exposing me to different production models, cultures, and approaches to live entertainment.
This period established the autodidactic foundation that continues to shape my work today. Every venue, crew, and production presented new challenges, reinforcing the belief that successful design comes not from rigid methodology but from understanding the unique requirements of a project.
During the next phase of my career, I moved into production audio roles on Broadway, international tours, and major theatrical productions. Working alongside designers including Mick Potter, Adam Fisher, Bobby Aitken, Simon King, Gareth Owen, and others, I contributed to productions such as Les Misérables, School of Rock, Cats, Miss Saigon, Sunset Boulevard, West Side Story, and The Phantom of the Opera.
These experiences deepened my understanding of large-scale system design, production logistics, and the relationship between creative intent and technical execution. They also reinforced the importance of balancing competing priorities while maintaining the integrity of the audience experience.
While continuing work in theatre, I began designing immersive entertainment environments with Spiegelworld, starting with Vegas Nocturne and Rose. Rabbit. Lie. at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. These projects expanded my focus beyond traditional theatre into the design of distributed audio environments where audiences, performers, architecture, and hospitality operations interact as a unified experience.
This work continued through projects including OPIUM, Atomic Saloon Show, DiscoShow, The Hook, and Superfrico, requiring increasingly sophisticated approaches to audio control, networking, and systems integration.
My current practice sits at the intersection of sound design, systems engineering, and infrastructure development. In addition to designing theatrical and immersive productions, I develop integrated platforms that combine audio, networking, show control, and operational technologies into scalable systems capable of supporting both creative and operational objectives.
Increasingly, my work is focused not on individual productions, but on the environments that support them. As the boundaries between theatre, hospitality, attractions, technology, and immersive entertainment continue to blur, venues are evolving into complex ecosystems where guest experience, infrastructure, and storytelling are inseparable.
Rather than viewing audio as a standalone discipline, I approach it as one component of a larger system that includes architecture, audience behavior, operational requirements, networking, and control infrastructure. The most successful environments are those that allow these elements to work together seamlessly, creating experiences that remain flexible, maintainable, and adaptable long after opening day.
The future of live entertainment is unlikely to be defined by any single technology. Instead, it will be shaped by the convergence of systems that have traditionally existed in isolation. Audio, networking, show control, operational technology, hospitality, and guest-facing experiences are becoming increasingly interconnected, creating new opportunities for venues to respond dynamically to both creative and operational needs.
My interest lies in helping develop these next-generation environments: spaces that are designed not only for today's productions, but for those that have yet to be imagined. By combining lessons learned from theatre, touring, immersive entertainment, and systems architecture, I continue to explore how technology can be used thoughtfully to create more meaningful, engaging, and adaptable experiences.
